The London bombings brought to mind an awful scene from Terry Gilliam's science fiction film Brazil. Gilliam, a former member of the Monty Python British comedy team, has a penchant for dark irony, and Brazil, released in 1985, has just enough creepy irony to be almost funny — a Pythonesque spin on George Orwell's 1984.

The connector market joins a host of other component segments, including flash memory, SAW filters, microprocessors, and flat-panel displays, that have experienced shortages in the last year.

We're hitting on all cylinders right now: military and aerospace, automotive, telecom, and PCs,” said Ron Bishop, an analyst at Bishop & Associates Inc., St. Charles, Ill.

That fact doesn't concern Avo Kanadjian, newly appointed vice president of worldwide marketing at Mountain View, Calif.-based Rambus. When ADT is done analyzing their DRAM requirements, they will be looking at a Rambus-compatible device. They'll need our participation,” Kanadjian said.

One concern was how to have slot room in the final product. We need to use a radio modem, but Tiny Tim's size does not allow us the luxury of having any ISA bus or PCI slots. Therefore a PCMCIA slot was critical. For our final design, we planned the product to be only 2.5 inches high. The PCMCIA slot allowed us the room for the credit-card-size application without adding any height to the tight, sleek dimensions.

The telecommunications industry took a more proprietary and comprehensive approach to this problem. Compared with PCs, a telecommunications network and its associated subscriber equipment have the advantage of being relatively closed; the operational configurations remain fairly well-defined and under strict administrative control. Still, vendors in this space have gone to great lengths to develop proprietary or semiproprietary communications protocols-even entire embedded operating systems-to support remote management on a system-wide basis.

This restructuring includes layoffs at the management level and costs associated with revamping the company's information technology infrastructure. Axsys will take a first-quarter charge of approximately $5 million. Annual savings are expected to be more than $3 million.

The AT+ i command execution block includes the software used to manage the routines that execute the commands to utilize the TCP/IP stack. The interpreter block interprets and understands the host requests. Once understood, it instructs the command execution block to run the command. To execute Internet commands, it utilizes the Internet tasks and TCP/IP block. For internal configuration, get or put routines are accessed from the multitasking OS. Application-specific tasks are accessed from the upper layer of the API.

That may be a bit of good news for DRAM makers, which have seen spot prices plunge yet again from a September high-water mark. Analysts predict 128 Mbytes will be the default loadout for a corporate Windows 2000 machine, up from the 64 Mbytes typically used for corporate Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 9X-based systems.
