Since Swiss and German job advertisers rarely, if ever, publish salary offers, EE Times turned to the Swiss Engineering Association, whose latest survey reports that the highest salaries for engineers are in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, which would include semiconductor engineers, where the median salary is SFr 130,000k (about $105,000).

Rohde & Schwarz is again merging core areas of competency from two business fields. With the R&S ZVL, the company presents the lightest and smallest vector network analyzer on the market – if desired, including spectrum analysis. The result is a unique all-purpose instrument that offers the scope of network-analysis functions of the established R&S ZVB and R&S ZVA instrument families. The newcomer thus includes features that are otherwise only available in larger and more expensive instruments – wide frequency ranges from 9 kHz to 3 GHz or 6 GHz, a large dynamic range of 123 dB, and bidirectional two-port measurement architecture. In future, it will also be possible to integrate the entire range of functions of the R&S FSL spectrum analyzer via a software option.

The revised projection, however, was attributed to lower-than-expected sales and operating earnings in its handset business. The financial problems stemmed from pricing competition, particularly in low end of the market, and a lagging product line in the market for advanced cellular phones that operate on carriers' high-speed networks. Motorola expected its mobile phone business to report an operating loss for the first quarter. The company is scheduled to release quarterly results April 18.

Thanks for the e-mails. And nothing beats knowing. Last month I wrote about my experience in the chemo room (see Feb. 19, page 73), and it brought a small sack of e-mails, several from longtime readers of this column. One note was from a guy I've known for over 30 years, since his days at a digital voltmeter outfit called Dana Laboratories. After reading that February column, my friend was surprised to learn I was only 72. He thought I was much older, in spite of the picture at the top of this column. The picture was taken in 1996. Where was I?

There's obviously ROI in the sale of slap-and-ship services to customers, however. In Europe, goods are sent from a supplier's warehouse to a DHL center where tags are slapped onto pallets and cases and shipped on to Metro AG's distribution centers.

LONDON — Alcatel-Lucent and Nortel have signed an agreement under which the French communications equipment maker would have the first option to buy the Canadian group's GSM activities if it decides to put them up for sale, French daily Les Echos has reported.

Huawei's senior VP of network marketing, Jeffrey Gao, says this is the first time a major equipment vendor” has combined OTN and WDM in the same platform. That combination enables carriers to create a meshed WDM architecture, rather than a network based on point-to-point WDM connections, note the Huawei team.

Post-silicon tunability is not a new approach; the authors note that it was applied to Intel's Dual Core Itanium processor. Several previous academic papers have addressed post-silicon tunability. But the ISPD 2007 authors say that no existing work has tried to integrate both post-silicon and pre-silicon optimizations into one flow.
