SAN JOSE, Calif. — Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) has completed the buyout of its Japanese unit, UMC Japan (UMCJ).

Based on the same architecture as the company's existing 8-bit 78K0 CPUs, the devices are suitable as fail-safe microcontrollers for a larger main controller, and for electronic controls such as full-bridge control of high-density discharge (HID) lamps, full/half-bridge control of motor switching, switching control of solenoid drivers and pulse-width modulation (PWM) for LED dimming. 

Nerve or brain stimulators are in the works to handle ailments ranging from Alzheimer's and epilepsy to addiction, depression, obesity and incontinence. Some implants will deliver drugs to targeted organs, reducing side effects compared with drugs delivered into the stomach or blood stream.

Twelve GLT employees are expected to join Rambus as the result of the acquisition, including co-founder and former CEO Jeff Parker, who will head a new Rambus Lighting Technology division, Rambus (Los Altos, Calif.) said. The nanoprobes are made from gold and magnetic particles. An MRI machine can track the magnetic portions of the nanoprobes while a more sensitive microscopy process can detect the gold.

This installation is expected to be completed in 2010. It includes the use of various interface types including ASCII, SNMP, OSSI and 3GPP CORBA, which is also part of a key focus of GSM-R networks for Harris Stratex.
