With the downturn in the technology sector, the number of class actions brought against technology – specifically telecom – companies has mushroomed. In the past week of my personal correspondence alone, two letters and one email have informed me about my inclusion in a class in suits against two telecom (and one computer hardware) companies. While one of these letters involves alleged securities law violations, two involve consumer issues related to overcharging. A third new strain of class action suits involves land-use rights. Although this last type affects a much smaller class (landowners and farmers in particular), it is potentially the most costly of the three for carriers.

By far, the most commonly encountered termination type is series, where a driver’s output impedance is matched to the transmission line (PCB trace or cable), either by virtue of its inherent output characteristics or by the addition of a resistor placed near the driver output. To address this, a new EDA startup called Invionics has introduced the Invio Platform, which allows custom EDA tools to be created in only days, weeks, or months, according to the company.

When I lived in South Africa, back in the 70s and 80s, as an engineer it was fairly difficult to keep up with technology. I had set up my own company and bought myself an Intel MDS II development system. The cost of the system was more than the cost of my house. But the real problem was the cost of software for both the Intel system and later PC software. When you translated the cost in South African rands and compared it to the cost of living, it was impossible to fund the purchases. What might cost an American one month’s salary would cost a South African a year’s salary or more. This problem persists around the world. As a result, I must admit there were times that I was less than fully legal in my use of software.

Therein would seem to lie a possible solution to compulsory network and infrastructure sharing: making it less bureaucratic for the operators to put up masts in areas particularly prone to not-spots quickly and in a more efficient way.

About a year ago, Communications Convergence (then Computer Telephony Magazine) ran an article titled SIP Rules!” which argued that the Session Initiation Protocol would change the way we think about telecommunications services in general, and Internet telephony in particular.
