Designing the Client and Server The Lighthouse MIDlet takes advantage of a client-server relationship between two mobile phones. The actual connection between the MIDlets is a datagram connection, which means that the messages sent between the phones are packaged as datagram packets. The client-server aspect of the Lighthouse design primarily has to do with which phone initiates the network connection. The following steps outline what takes place between client and server phones in the Lighthouse MIDlet:

In this case, we apply the LTC3785 controller in a synchronous, four-switch buck-boost converter topology to produce a fixed output of 3.3 volts at 3 amps from a 2.7-to-10 volt input (Figure 1). Its efficiency is as high as 96 percent (Figure 2). The LTC3785 provides all n-channel MOSFET gate drive, facilitating the use of low RDS(ON) devices. Its topology and control architecture employs MOSFET RDS(ON) sensing for forward and reverse current limiting. An optional sense resistor may be used if the designer desires increased current-limit accuracy. Moreover, the chip incorporates Burst Mode operation, which reduces the (light-load) quiescent current to less than 100 microamps. The LTC3785 also incorporates true output disconnect during shutdown so that the battery is not connected to the system load.

The MSP430 family, however, only has a 16×16 Multiplier in its MAC unit. This means that designers are limited to 16-bit data and 16-bit coefficients. In order to achieve the performance that is required in most audio systems, data and coefficients need to be larger than 16 bits wide. Using only a 16×16 Multiplier, the designer could easily see a performance degradation of 10X or more.
