SANTA CLARA, Calif.–In a move to expand its chip design capabilities for battery-powered applications, National Semiconductor Corp. today announced it has acquired Fincitec Oy of Finland and ARSmikro OU in Estonia in transactions valued at a total of $15 million.

Accellera last week announced that its Verilog Formal Verification committee had voted to select Sugar as a standard formal property language. That will provide a standard way to write properties and check assertions in simulation or formal verification. But OpenVera 2.0, created with the merger of Intel's ForSpec language into Synopsys' OpenVera, makes the same promise.

The initial approach for convergence processing that most designs used was a software-centric approach, in which there was typically a bank of DSPs that performed voice processing, a general-purpose processor that ran packetization software and a separate control processor for handling control plane messages. Although this may have been sufficient for first-generation designs, the scalability, capacity and latency were all compromised, since much of the critical data functionality was run in software. Thus, as the channel count increased an eventual loss in programmable MIPS was experienced, even for relatively powerful processors. In some cases, one generic processor is used for both data and control, further reducing the capacity of this architecture. Modern network-processor architectures take great pains to separate the data path from the control path for optimal processing.
