The reorganization better positions us to take the next step in wireless home networking, enable new applications, devices and services, and aggressively work to educate consumers about the advantages of HomeRF-enabled and certified products,” said Kevin Negus, the chairman of the HomeRF Working Group.

And remember that these controls were on the back of the set, which meant you had to drag the whole thing away from the wall and squeeze behind it to be able to access the small, ill-marked, hard-to-reach knobs.

Fujitsu and Panasonic don't break out their semiconductor sales to the same level of detail that Renesas does, but both also have products in addition to SoCs. Fujitsu, for example, also has a strong microcontroller business, as well as memory chips, ASSPs and other devices that presumably would not be part of the proposed JV. Panasonic also offers chips like power supplies including switching and DC-DC converters, also which presumably would not be in the mix.

The SoC verification problem is so daunting that it will only be solved through automation.Complex SoC use cases that cross multiple concurrent applications with shared resources and on-board power and clocking management systems present an overwhelming number of possible scenarios. Automation software is required to assess what to test and to rapidly develop tests needed to adequately cover the wide spectrum of verification objectives.

Scaglia, who used to head Cadence Berkeley Labs, challenged the EDA community to move up the food chain” and pursue a much broader mission. How about not just doing design, but doing it better? And not just because place and route is faster, but because you have a more flexible architecture? Think of something!” he said.

This broad definition of quality is subjective, but the DTC plans to come up with some standardized metrics that will make it possible to establish an industry-average quality measure. Now, the DTC is analyzing requirements and objectives. The group hopes to design and deploy a Web-based data collection system by April, with publication of data by next year's Design Automation Conference. It's possible that some vendor will receive a best quality” award at that conference.

Measure the impact of returns.   Like manufacturers, retailers need metrics to assess the problem and track trends. It is critical to begin with a baseline to benchmark the current impact of returns. Using that information, they can determine cost-appropriate levels of improvement and introduce new approaches. For retailers, the most important metrics are: return rates by item; item class and manufacturer; length of time since purchase; and reason for the return. Without this information, it is nearly impossible to determine what new approaches might reduce return rates. No trouble found products are particularly important because, theoretically, these are 100 percent avoidable. The reason for any return ultimately deemed NTF should be studied carefully. Educate the customer. Customer education before and after the purchase is vital. Educating on the front-end of the purchase helps the customer better understand whether the product they’re buying will do what they want.  With more bells and whistles” comes an increased need for product education.  For instance, some car manufacturers and dealers provide DVDs to instruct buyers on how to use the Global Positioning Satellite and other functions offered on high-end cars, and offer post-sales sales classes on the weekends They also should go over various features with the new owner before they leave the lot – even loading the owner’s cell phone information into the car if it has a Bluetooth capability.

But turn that frown upside down into a smile. Fortunately I know just what to do, which is the same thing I did when my DIY Geiger Counter failed to perform its sole function in life (Click Here)… I shipped it to my electronics guru friend David Ashton in Australia and he soon brought the little rascal to life (Click Here). In fact, it’s happily clicking away to itself on my desk as I pen these words.

Under the terms of a deal announced here today, ViA — which is not related to Taiwanese PC chip set and processor maker Via — will develop a line of wearable PCs for the U.S. Army based on Transmeta's Crusoe processor family.
