In order to address throughput problems in mobile handsets, one must look to the current architecture to see where the bottlenecks reside. A mobile handset, for example, has a main processor interfacing to the RF block of the handset and controlling the LCD, keypad, memory, audio, camera, and connectivity to the PC and other peripherals. The number of tasks the processor handles are so numerous that offloading tasks will largely improve the performance of the phone and the user experience as a whole. In this manner the added pressure of increasing data throughput can be alleviated without adding a second processor or increasing network traffic.

The third part here introduced the Sobel edge filter. This filter belongs to the feature extraction field and can be found at the start of many applications. There it creates an image (scalar field) and a gradient image (vector field). Differing implementations in C and also in assembler were introduced and their performances were compared. This installment also discussed under which conditions a C compiler can produce a more highly optimized assembler code. The results were compared with a hand written assembler code, and shows that a C compiler can produce favorable results with consideration to the implemented processor architecture.
