Realizing an effective power solution without ‘full custom’ risks The problem for system designers is that there has, until recently, been a limited market for hot-swappable power sources at less than 400 Watts so the provision of redundancy is more challenging, both in terms of the space available and the fact that off-the-shelf, hot-swap enabled power supplies are unlikely to have the exact combination of AC input, DC output and control interfaces located exactly where they are needed for a such a wide variety of systems. There is now little standardization of system design.

The various instruction and data buses are often bridged over to common memory and peripheral busses. Such bridges provide sophisticated links from system-level buses to lower levels in the bus hierarchy. To make things even more complex, the bridged buses may have different widths, and may be running in different clock domains at different frequencies.

An example: Automotive system with SRAM-based FPGAs This example analyzes an in-the-cab ground-based system. Neutron flux densities were calculated for Denver, CO at an elevation of 5,000 feet using SpaceRad 4.5 (a widely used radiation effects prediction software program). Working from published radiation data on 0.22-micron SRAM-based FPGAs, the predicted upset rate of 1.05E-4 upsets per 1M-gate FPGA per day.
