Kanata, Ont.–Dec. 15, 1997–Tundra Semiconductor has announced a new50-MHz version of its Qspan bus bridge chip, which supports Motorola'snew family of MPC8XX 50-MHz embedded processors. As a result, designerscan be sure that their MPC8XX 50MHz-based designs can access the performanceand cost benefits of the PCI bus.Besides offering direct connection and full compatibility to the MPC8XX andMotorola embedded processors, the new version of the Qspan chip featuresincreased performance and functionality, as well as pin and functionalcompatibility with the previous Qspan device. The 50-MHz Qspan will beavailable in 5-V and 3-V versions for those applications requiring smallerboard layout and lower power.Key performance improvements include a ten-fold increase in the PCI targetchannel performance as a result of deeper FIFOs, separate read/write FIFOs,bursting, and prefetching. This allows for increased data rates into andout of local memory. Further, the Qbus slave now offers deeper FIFOs, asdoes the IDMA channel, with the added benefit of a PCI burst lengthcounter. Optimized use of the bus results and the system processor canmore efficiently move data to and from the local bus.Developed in partnership with Motorola, Tundra Qspan is the onlydirect connect PCI solution for the MC68360(QUICC), MPC860(PowerQUICC), MPC850, MPC821, MPC801, and the MC68040 embeddedprocessors. Tundra Qspan also provides a PCI solution with minimal gluelogic for the PowerPC602, PowerPC603, PowerPC603e, MC68302, and MC68030processors. Tundra Qspan provides full IDMA support for the MC68360 andMPC860 and supports direct connection to MC68360 + MPC860, or MC68360 +M68040 on the same bus.Tundra Qspan supports the bridging of PCI into a broad spectrum of Motorolaprocessor-based applications, including ATM, LAN and other networkswitching, Ethernet hubs and adapters, routers, servers, wirelesscommunications, medical imaging, and industrial control systems.Leaders in networking and data communications who have designed in theTundra Qspan include Bay Networks, Cisco, IBM, Lucent Technologies,Motorola Computer Group, Newbridge Networks, Nippon Unisoft, and Nortel. The Tundra Qspan Toolbox provides a full suite of development tools fordesigners working with the PCI bus: evaluation boards with driver software for the 5-V PBGA Tundra Qspan, executable models and IBIS models, Orcad and Mentor symbols, reference design, user manual and application notes for specific processors, as well asTundra's acclaimed applications engineering support and documentation. The 3.3-V PBGA and 5-V PQFP Tundra Qspan will both be available in samplequantities in December 1997. Production pricing (10,000) for the 3.3-V PBGAwill be $25.20. Production pricing (10,000) for the 5-V PQFP will be $24.

Sun's strong market position, moderate leverage, and good financialflexibility provide downside protection. Highly competitive industryconditions and rapid technology evolution are likely to preclude a ratingsimprovement.

Xylan's strategy is to provide broad switching support for the existing base of Token Ring users, and to simultaneously make it easier for them to interoperate with, and migrate to other technologies. A single OmniSwitch can switch among 48 Token Ring LANs. And the Token Ring workstations and servers can connect to devices using Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, frame relay, and ATM.
